This site will contain news of interest to anglers, visitors and proprietors of fishing alike. It will contain, among other things, copies of the Fishery Board's Environment Manager's reports; information about problems and any pollution incidents; details of who to contact in the event of problems relating to the river and its tributaries, and many, many links to other sites of interest in the area and beyond.

It will detail works both ongoing and at the planning stage to improve the Annan and its environment as a natural resource for the enjoyment of visitor and local alike.

If there are problems with any item on the site, including broken links please contact The Webmaster

NEWSFLASH

ALL Nick's Habitat and quarterly reports have now been bound in book form to the end of 2002. The volume is available from Lockerbie Public Library shortly and can also be seen at the Fishery Board Office, at St. Anns.

Some "cheerful" reading for the winter months
Gyrodactylus Salaris is an extremely dangerous parasite that could destroy all salmon stocks. Already it has destroyed salmon stocks in over 20 rivers in Norway. It was introduced to the Atlantic coast of Norway on Baltic Sea salmon taken to fish farms on the Atlantic coast (There's a surprise!!) While Baltic salmon are immune to the parasite, Atlantic salmon are not.

Recent tests have shown that Scottish Atlantic salmon are destroyed by it just as easily as Norwegian salmon. Methods such as poisoning all the fish in a river are being used in Norway to try and break the cycle.

G. Salaris is a minute parasite, less than half a millimetre long and can live away from fish, in gravel for at least 7 days, AND on cool and damp anglers equipment for a similar period. Heat, dryness and high levels of salt kill it.

As this parasite can be passed from river to river via anglers tackle the Fishery Board is encouraging all visiting anglers to disinfect their fishing equipment by use of salt water or drying their equipment thoroughly to 20 degrees C for 2 days. If this parasite reaches our rivers it will mean the end of our salmon so take heed and support these measures.

Obviously anglers visiting Norway should take extreme precautions on their return. Everything should be thoroughly washed in salt water first to kill the parasite. Then re washed in fresh water to prevent corrosion. Then dried well.
